Taking the top spot is New York's Attaboy.

Attaboy took top honors on the 2022 list of North America's 50 best bars, after being named the 34th best bar worldwide last year.

It was announced in New York on Tuesday evening that North America's 50 Best Bars had been ranked for the first time. As well as publishing The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and The World’s 50 Best Bars, William Reed has compiled the list. There are 29 bars on the new list in the US, 11 in Mexico, eight in Canada, and two in the Caribbean.

"We extend our congratulations to Attaboy, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and we look forward to seeing this legacy continue under Haley Traub's exuberant leadership," Mark Sansom, North America's 50 Best Bars content director, said. “We congratulate all the bars on the inaugural list of North America's 50 Best Bars.”

A new trend for speakeasies was ushered in with the opening of Attaboy in 2012. Michael McIlroy and Sam Ross previously worked at Milk & Honey, which is credited with launching the global speakeasy movement.

A cocktail menu is not available at the bar, which encourages guests to converse with the bartenders in greater detail. In spite of this, Attaboy has still created classic drinks, including Ross's Penicillin and McIlroy's Greenpoint. It has ranked No. 1 on the North American list every year since opening, and is also on The World's 50 Best Bars list.

Besides Attaboy, Mexico City's Handshake Speakeasy and Licoreria Limantour were ranked No. 2 and 3 on North America's 50 Best Bars, respectively. As well as Katana Kitten in New York and Kumiko in Chicago, Toronto's Civil Liberties (No. 10) is the highest-ranking bar in Canada. The Caribbean's first entry was San Juan's La Factoría (No. 12).
