Almost anything you can imagine on a roof of a downtown Manhattan apartment building would be found on its rooftop: tar, air conditioning compressors, a sofa that someone brought up there and left to decay in the sun, a water tower, perhaps a deck, or maybe even plants. Private heated swimming pool with sweeping skyline views over fluttering seagrass plants planted along a sinuous curve is something most people would not expect.

The number of rooftop pools is actually much higher than most people would expect, despite the fact that they are still rare. In the Chelsea neighborhood of New York, a duplex penthouse originally priced at $12.5 million in 2020 is now selling for $10 million.

The three-bedroom, three and a half bathroom condo on the second floor of a Cary Tamarkin-designed building evoked early 20th century artist studio buildings. It is one of just a few dozen condos on the building. The roof terrace was also kitted out by Frances D’Haene, who decoratively gussied it up.

As you gaze up from the street, you can see some unexpected red-brick squiggles against the blue sky, in contrast to the flat façade with its vast windows. Inside the penthouse, a massive steel-framed picture window offsets the long linearity of the gas fireplace in the living room's 20-foot high ceiling, and a sleek open-plan kitchen with white laminate cabinets and snow-white Corian counters contrasts with Baltic Birch cabinets along its back. One of the red brick ribbons visible from the street encircles the kitchen and adjacent dining area with a slender balcony.

A wet bar is located between the living room and the en-suite bedroom, which can serve as a home office, yoga studio, or den. The living room below is complemented by a gallery that offers views of the city and the living room above. In addition to the main suite, there is also another en-suite guest room, which offers extensive closet space as well as a minimalist poured-concrete bathroom with a dazzling view of the outside world.

Just outside of the apartment is another slim and curvaceous balcony. There are also a number of other notable features within the apartment, such as a full-size washer/dryer, white oak hardwood floors, central heat and air, and a home automation system that allows audio/video equipment, climate systems, and window coverings to be controlled remotely.

As swanky as all that may be, what makes the most of all this is what lurks at the top of the staircase leading into a massive glass bulkhead that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. There is a fantastic rooftop terrace that is a little shy of 2,000 square feet, and it includes an outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill for summer entertaining, a unique wooden dining pavilion, and - you guessed it - a swimming pool.

Swimming laps in a heated swimming pool under the glow of the Empire State Building on a hot summer night is a perfect way to pass the time. On the roof deck, one of the most surprising features is a hidden pool bathroom, which can be found below the stainless-steel planter that is located behind the pool.

There are approximately $13,000 in total costs for taxes and other common charges for the home as per Rich Report, and that does not include the cost of cleaning the pool which is included in these costs! Douglas Elliman Realty power broker (and star of "Million Dollar Listing") Fredrik Eklund is the agent who can help you find the penthouse and its pool. In addition to being available for purchase, the penthouse can also be rented for $35,000 per month for those who are not ready to commit to a purchase.
