SkyDrive has preordered ten SD-05 eVTOLs from the Vietnamese renewable-energy company Pacific Group. It is conditional that Pacific Group will purchase up to 90 additional aircraft under a newly-signed memorandum of understanding.

In 2018, SkyDrive, based in Japan, began developing personal eVTOL aircraft and cargo drones. A fully electric, two-seat eVTOL aircraft, the SD-05 was unveiled by SkyDrive last year and is designed to travel 10 kilometers at a speed of 100 kph (62 mph), at a maximum altitude of 500 meters.

Despite being the company's first eVTOL vehicle to be evaluated for type certification, the SD-05 will not be a production model for the company. A similar aircraft to the SD-05 will be SkyDrive's production aircraft, which is still unnamed. As of 2024, SkyDrive plans to begin flight testing the SD-05 with the company's previous prototype, a single-seat eVTOL aircraft called the SD-03. During the World Expo 2025, which will take place in the Japanese city of Osaka, SkyDrive plans to have the new aircraft ready to start air taxi services.

In addition, Pacific Group and SkyDrive will collaborate in researching sustainable and accessible mobility solutions for Vietnamese consumers. Besides exploring SD-05 use cases, the companies will also evaluate vertiports and other infrastructure requirements in Vietnam's urban air mobility ecosystem.

Vietnam's streets are crowded with motorcycles and [automobiles], and they are lively and exciting. SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa stated that, given the current problem of traffic safety and greenhouse gas emissions, this is a key social issue that needs to be addressed.

Vietnam could achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 with the introduction of eVTOL aircraft, according to Pacific Group's executive president and founder Le Ngoc Anh Minh. Vietnam and Japan will celebrate their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2023, and he said he was looking forward to collaborating with SkyDrive on several activities for the promotion of this eVTOL, not just for our business, but also to contribute to their scientific and friendship cooperation.
