With the help of a high-capacity battery pack, the trailer and all its appliances will be able to run for up to a week on a single charge.

As this may be the first time that an electric vehicle has been used for camping, the Lightship may have just made it that much easier.

In order to resolve one of the biggest issues that come with using a battery-powered vehicle to tow something, the company has just announced the L1, a new travel trailer that promises to solve this problem.

With its own electric powertrain, it can propel itself and not drain the battery of the vehicle towing it, making it possible for it to propel itself without draining the battery of the towing vehicle.

Due to its powertrain, the L1 is essentially an electric vehicle, albeit one that can't be controlled independently. Founders Ben Parker and Toby Kraus, both of whom are Tesla alums, and its team also includes former employees of Rivian and Lucid, so Lightship knows a thing or two about electric cars.

Despite tipping the scales at 7,500 pounds, the 27-foot trailer will not drain the range of any battery-powered car, SUV, or truck towing it if it is powered by an 80-kWh battery pack that makes up the powertrain.

As a result of a roof-mounted array of solar panels that can produce up to three kilowatts of power, the battery pack can also be used to charge up the battery on your electric vehicle when you're not near a charging station.

According to Rich Report, the trailer is aerodynamically designed and stands only six feet nine inches in Road Mode, so that no unnecessary drag is generated. In Camp Mode, the roof of the trailer rises up to a height of 10 feet, increasing the amount of room inside the vehicle while also revealing a series of large panoramic windows.

In addition to the renderings of the interior, Lightship says the cabin will come equipped with electric appliances and sleeps six. Lightship has only seen renderings of the interior, but the cabin looks to have a spacious and minimalistic design.

Additionally, if you're going to spend time off the grid, the trailer's battery is capable of delivering enough power to keep the trailer and all of its features running for up to a week.

“We are leveraging our expertise in automotive EV development and design to build a brand that creates delightful outdoor travel experiences for everyone and brings even more people into the pastime of RVing,” Kraus explained.

For $500, you can reserve the Lightship L1. It is expected to go into production late next year and will cost $125,000, but electric vehicle tax credits can help lower the price.

The trailer is available now for $500 through the Lightship website. This vehicle will be on display this coming weekend at South by Southwest if you would like to see it for yourself.
