Introducing the Key Club, Miami's Newest Restaurant

Groot Hospitality's newest restaurant is from David Grutman.
A number of the country's top restaurateurs, as well as Michelin, are flocking to Miami, but David Grutman has always been there. With hit clubs Liv and Story, and now a collection of restaurants, he’s made his way up from being a bartender in a sleepier part of town 25 years ago to becoming the king of Miami nightlife. He is riding the wave of Miami’s dining boom while outsiders establish their first restaurants in Miami. The Key Club, which opened in January 2022, is his latest venture.
As the menu for the Key Club is finalized, it will include seafood, steaks, salads, and more from the Key Club, a type of supper club fare that has been resurgent over the past few years across the country. Although the concept is different from what Grutman has done in the past, it’ll still feel like one of his venues, where you'll probably sing along to “Living on a Prayer” or “Africa” as you eat.

Aside from his celebrity friends and clientele, Grutman has also been able to cultivate a loyal following over the years. The famous tend to end up in Grutman's care at some point when they come to South Florida, whether it's Kim Kardashian, David Beckham, Justin Bieber or Pharrell Williams who Grutman partners with in one of his restaurants.
Following Grutman's opening of three new restaurants in an old Firestone garage on Miami Beach, the Key Club is located south of downtown in Coconut Grove. A concept called Sushi Fly Chicken features fried chicken from across Asia, Winker's Diner is a more upscale version of a neighborhood diner, and Toothfairy is a bakery. Grutman's Groot Hospitality runs these venues, which Live Nation acquired 51 percent ownership of in 2019.

During a time when Miami real estate prices are soaring for restaurateurs, that cash injection has allowed Groot Hospitality to scale up, leading to its current expansion. Miami has seen a "gold rush" for restaurant space as New York hitmakers like Major Food Group, Marcus Samuelsson and Cote build in the city. Due to the out-of-town money, locals are having trouble competing. Groot is one of those locals.
As a result of the funding, as well as because of its expansion prior to the current boom, the company has been well positioned. Luckily, his empire is scaling up at the same time as people moving to Miami who want the boisterous experience he is offering. For example, the Key Club has been under construction for over 18 months.
