David Benioff, the creator of Game of Thrones, is still carving out his new Los Angeles fiefdom amidst the tales of Jon Snow, Cersei, and the rest. It turns out Benioff, 51, bought Rupert Murdoch's son Lachlan's bucolic Brentwood estate for nearly $22 million.

In spite of the fact that this deal closed off-market, grant deeds reveal that it was actually signed way back in September 2020. In addition, the house was never publicly listed for sale, although tax records and old listings indicate it consists of a 1930s ranch house and a small guest cottage, totaling about 6,000 square feet.

In Los Angeles, you won't find a true ranch as close to 2.3 acres as you will on this 2.3-acre estate. Located at the end of a cul-de-sac in equestrian-oriented Mandeville Canyon, this gated property boasts rolling lawns, many native oaks and sycamores, several vegetable gardens and even a small vineyard. Additionally, there's a large swimming pool set into a clearing, plus panoramic views of mountains and canyons.

Murdoch appears to have made a good profit on this house, as he bought it back in 2013 for "just" $12.5 million, although it's unclear what improvements and renovations he made over the years. Anyhow, the Fox CEO and his wife Sarah Murdoch have substantially upgraded their residential circumstances - in 2020, they paid exactly $150 million for Chartwell, the longtime residence of Univision chairman Jerry Perenchio.

The son of former Goldman Sachs CEO Stephen Friedman, Benioff grew up in wealthy New York City. He is also the cousin of Salesforce founder Marc Benioff. After joining HBO's "Game of Thrones" as a co-creator with fellow writer D.B. Weiss, he also wrote screenplays for blockbuster films (“Troy,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”). A $200 million Nexflix deal was reached in 2019 between he and Weiss.

The $5 million home Benioff owns near West Hollywood is still owned by his longtime wife, actress Amanda Peet. A $4.7 million apartment they owned in Manhattan was sold last year.
