NFTs are included with each $3,500 bottle sold by the Napa Valley legend.

It may be over half a century since the Robert Mondavi Winery was established, but it is certainly plugged into the modern zeitgeist. Napa Valley's top winery has just released a limited-edition collection of wines that can be accessed exclusively through non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

With the help of French porcelain house Bernardaud, the new "MCMLXVI" series was developed. The new series will be available starting on December 15, with 1,966 exquisite porcelain magnums, each priced at $3,500, which are in honor of the winery's founding year. Moreover, 50 bottles will be reserved exclusively for Robb Report readers from December 12–14, when they will have access to the pre-sale. As always, you can also pay with Ethereum in addition to regular USD.

How exactly does this work? In the event that you purchase a NFT digital artwork, Clay Heaton will create an exclusive and collectible digital artwork that will be unique and collectible. Basically, this token is essentially a "key" of sorts, and it allows you to access a real-life bottle of wine, along with exclusive winery experiences and future offerings from the winery.

Moreover, collectors will also be provided with a digital transaction record for the NFT purchase that will serve as a proof of authenticity and will remain on the blockchain for the rest of their lives. The wine industry, as well as other industries, is increasingly adopting this type of authentication technology in an effort to fight counterfeit products.

There's no denying that the digital aspect is impressive, but there's nothing like a tangible experience. In the 150-year history of Bernardaud, the magnums represent the first wine bottles that the company has ever made. Each 1.5-liter bottle is designed in such a way that it takes 50 skilled craftsmen two weeks to create. It is sleek and minimalistic by design.

Lastly, there is the wine itself that is included. The collection consists of three separate blends of wine, one of which comes in a matte black bottle and the other two in burgundy red bottles, all of which have been designed by winemakers Geneviève Janssens, Andy Erickson, and Thomas Rivers Brown. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from the winery’s home vineyard, To Kalon, that will age for over 30 years. Brown’s creation is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and Erickson's creation is 89 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc.

It's like a combination of a Cab Franc and a Cabernet Sav, as well as a little Petit Verdot, that this wine showcases more of the vineyard's range, while the Janssens shows more of the vineyard's range.
